TAKAMETSÄ / BACKYARD FOREST
/ 3D animation, shortfilm / 14:40 / 2024.
BACKYARD FOREST is a critical view on “short-form” media, popularized by TikTok since 2020. It is a journey through a reconstructed childhood memory into the depths of algorithm-based social media platforms. How does the invasive consumption of short-form media affect one’s memory? How do we distinguish factual from fiction and is it even necessary to draw such a line?

2024 Installation at the summer exhibition “Klauzury” / Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
Simple and humble installation in the corner. I wanted to create an intimate space with only two seats and two headphones. The seat is an old tree trunk.

The 3D environment was created in Blender using open source laser scanning data from The Silva Tarouca Research Institute. Terrestrial laser scanning is a method of scanning environments for deformation measurements, quality control or topographical surveying and cultural heritage monitoring for example in forestry and agriculture research. It creates so-called point cloud data which can then be represented in 3D space.
Video reels in this work are captured on incognito browser from Youtube. My personal search history did not affect the material. (Usually the feed is personalised by the algorithm.) I tried to stay as truthful as possible to the original sequence of the videos, as how the algorithm gave them to me. Some editing was done, including my own Youtube shorts videos.
